Een video van het project "Blijf binnen, sluit ramen en deuren" is geselecteerd voor de tentoonstelling Hareng Saur: Ensor en de hedendaagse kunst, in het SMAK in Gent. De opening is op zaterdag 30 oktober om 14:00, in het Museum voor Schone kunsten Gent. De tentoonstelling loopt tot 27 februari 2011.

Zondag 4 April / Sunday April 4th, Schijnheilig presents: Bookpresentation ‘Stay Inside. Close Windows and Doors’,
followed by the screening of George A. Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (1978).

A night of gore, zombie slapstick and alienated entertainment!

Ever since the release of George A. Romero’s zombie-epic Dawn of the Dead, the zombie has become a comical figure of cultural critique. In Romero’s film, zombies wandering aimlessly though a suburban shopping mall serve as a grotesque representation of contemporary consumerism and alienation. Presently, artists Klaas van Gorkum and Iratxe Jaio have started their own brand of zombie critique, inviting the neighbors of Overvecht (Utrecht) to join them on Zombie parades to the local shopping mall. They have now published the book ‘Stay Inside. Close windows and doors’ and Klaas will join us to speak about their experiences.

More on the project:
“Stay Inside. Close windows and doors” is a project by the artists Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum that presents the zombie as a distorted image of the exemplary citizen, to address ideas of multitude, consumerism, dystopia, alienation and participatory practices. The artists organised two Zombiewalks, inviting neighbourhood residents to join them in a morbid parade that lead to the local shopping malls, where the participants, dressed up like bloodied corpses, would mingle with the startled customers, in a collective action between performance, dérive and street theatre.

These events have provided the content for the final publication: “Quédense dentro y cierren las ventanas – Stay inside. Close windows and doors”, edited by the artists and published by consonni. It contains texts written by, among others, the cinema critic Jordi Costa, the philosopher Jaime Cuenca Amigo, the director of The Showroom in London Emily Pethick, the artistic director in Fundación Tapies (Barcelona) Laurence Rassel, and a comic by Maaike Hartjes.

Dead time in Gure Artea

Dead time, the new work by Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum, related to the Barakaldo Zombiewalk, will be presented in Museum Artium in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The artists received awards in 2008 in the twentieth edition of the biannual Gure Artea prize, together with Asier Mendizabal (Ordizia, 1973) and Xabier Salaberria (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1969). The exhibition Gure Artea XX, curated by Miren Jaio, shows works by these artists developed over the course of the last year.

Dead time presents the record of a zombiewalk in three simultaneous video projections, as it marches towards a shopping mall in Barakaldo. The walk replicates a scene from Dawn of the Dead (1978) by George A. Romero, the movie that introduced the zombie as an alter ego of the alienated consumer. The video installation is accompanied by photographs of the recently constructed and empty urban spaces that served as a backdrop to the walk, reminding us that public space is primarily given significance through social practices.

The idea of a crowd of grotesquely dressed up zombies, simulating lack of direction and purpose, but fully aware of producing an image (since film first portrayed them, zombies have walked because of and in front of the camera), lends itself to all kinds of contexts: from self-serving subcultural rites to commercial marketing campaigns, from the neo-situationist drift of social activism to artistic performance. As a sign, the mob of zombies owes its porosity and capacity to provoke to its nature as a negative image of the classical representation of the modern collective subject: the marching crowd, united in a common cause.

In times of capitalist crisis our city breaks further apart into pieces: areas where you should shop-shop-shop, areas for drinks and allowed fun, areas to sleep and watch TV and expanding areas with just boring offices (and many of them empty...). Zombie Manifesto

De Zombie is wellicht niet het meest glamoureuze figuur die de filmwereld heeft voortgebracht. Doelloos en zonder persoonlijkheid is de Zombie eerder een antiheld, een weerzinwekkende parodie op de ideale burger, met niets dan automatische reflexen uit een vorig leven die hem op de been houden.

Toch is het niet moeilijk sympathie op te brengen voor deze sinistere slaapwandelaar. In een samenleving waar niets zo grillig is als de wérkelijke betekenis van 'leefbaar', houdt de Zombie ons een spiegel voor. Hij confronteert ons met onze opvattingen over menselijkheid, burgerschap en participatie.

Wat een verlossing moet het zijn om voor één dag in zijn schoenen te lopen. Om de zin van het leven naast je neer te leggen, en al kreunend door de slapende voorsteden te strompelen. Om te spoken door de winkelcentra, en gewillig hun belofte van individuele zelfontplooiing te omarmen.

Als jij je wel eens in je arm hebt geknepen om te kijken of dit leven echt is, weet dan dat je niet de enige bent. Doe mee met onze melancholische revolutie, zonder leiders en zonder richting. Doe mee, als wij de straat op gaan en gezamenlijk oprukken naar een nieuwe dageraad.

De Zondagsschool doet uitverkoop in de mechanismen achter ons koopgedrag. Hebben we shopping-genen? Is de winkel verworden tot onze natuurlijke habitat? Er valt deze middag veel te leren van trendwatcher Janus ter visser. We duiken in de architectuur van shopping malls en psychologe Lies Klumper vertelt hoe zij koopverslaafden behandelt. Iratxe Jaio en Klaas van Gorkum presenteren het project "Blijf binnen. Sluit ramen en deuren.", waarin zombies een grote rol spelen. De presentaties worden afgewisseld met films van o.a. Yael Bartana, Chris Oakley en the church of stop shopping.
